June 25, 2015
On Thursday, June 25, the Supreme Court ruled 6-to-3 in King v. Burwell, assuring the constitutionality of federal tax subsidies for low and middle income Americans to purchase health insurance through exchanges in states that are run by the federal government via healthcare.gov.
The decision protects health insurance access and affordability for the 6.5 million Americans who currently receiving federal subsidies and ensures the endurance of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement. Since its implementation, the ACA has allowed millions of Americans to gain access to more affordable health insurance as well as coverage for the first time, including people living with HIV and other chronic health and behavioral health conditions.
