White House Announces Release of Updated National HIV/AIDS Strategy

julio 30 2015

Amida Care applauds President Obama and Douglas Brooks, director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP), for their leadership in developing and advancing the updated National HIV/AIDS Strategy, released on July 30. Building on the successful outcomes of the original 2010 strategy, the update outlines goals for 2020, capitalizing on the major scientific and policy advances of the last five years, which include an emphasis on treatment as prevention; the advent of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which prevents infection in people who are not HIV positive; and implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which improves access to quality health care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Developed by ONAP, the 2010 strategy was the first-ever comprehensive, coordinated roadmap to address HIV/AIDS in the United States, setting goals to reduce new HIV infections, increase access to care and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV, and reduce HIV-related disparities. The updated strategy lays out plans to address these goals by focusing on widespread HIV testing and linkage to care; improving viral suppression in people living with HIV, which benefits their health and greatly reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others; and providing full access to PrEP when indicated.

undefinedThe update also calls for a concentration on population groups that may have the greatest risk of HIV infection and need for care, including gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM); transgender women; Latinos and Latinas; youth from 13 to 24 years old; people who inject drugs; and people living in the South—recognizing that black gay and bisexual men and black transgender women are disproportionately affected.

Amida Care fully supports the agenda of the updated strategy. It thoroughly aligns with our work to provide coordinated care and support that improves the health and quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS, and to advocate for policies and initiatives that will reduce the spread of the infection.
