FAQs

People who are thinking about enrolling in Amida Care’s health plan often ask these questions. We hope these answers will help you. If you have other questions or concerns, please call Member Services at 1-800-556-0689 (TTY 711). We’re here to help!

Will I lose my Medicaid if I join Amida Care?

You will still have Medicaid—and all the services you need. Amida Care becomes your insurance company under Medicaid Managed Care. We pay for most of your medical and mental health care, including doctors’ visits, hospital care, and medications. Regular Medicaid pays for other services, such as dental care and outpatient substance abuse treatment.

Will my Primary Care doctor understand my special needs?

Amida Care has a large network of Primary Care doctors who are HIV specialists and understand the specific health care needs of people living with HIV or who need gender-affirming care.

Can I still see the Primary Care doctor I’m seeing now?

You can, if your doctor is a participating Primary Care Provider (PCP) with the Amida Care Live Life Plus plan. It’s easy to find out if your doctor is part of the Amida Care provider network:

Can Amida Care help me with housing issues?

Amida Care is a health plan with special care coordination services. While we are not a housing program like HASA, we can help members by referring them to housing and supportive services organizations. Our Homeless Outreach, Management and Empowerment (HOME) program assists our members who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and connects them to vital health and social services.

Do I have to make co-payments when I see doctors?

There are no co-payments for you to make. As an Amida Care Live Life Plus member, you’ll make no co-payments for covered services. We’ll pay doctors and hospitals directly. You pay nothing to them.

What if I decide to dis-enroll from the Live Life Plus plan?

We make every effort to ensure your complete satisfaction at all times. If the Live Life Plus plan is not meeting your needs, please call our Member Services department at 1-800-556-0689 (TTY 711) so that we can work with you to resolve any issues. If you still want to leave the plan, you may call New York Medicaid Choice at 1-800-505-5678 to choose a different plan. You will likely be disenrolled from Amida Care on the first day of the next month.

Can my spouse or partner enroll with me? What about my children?

Only adults with HIV/AIDS, people who are homeless regardless of HIV status, and people of transgender experience regardless of HIV status can enroll in Amida Care’s Medicaid Live Life Plus plan. However, members who are parents or guardians can also enroll their children, whether the children have HIV/AIDS or not.

What kind of transgender and gender-affirming care do you offer?

We understand that each person’s transition and health goals are different, and our specialized Trans Health Team will work with you to identify your needs, review your options, and connect you to affirming care and services. We offer gender-affirming surgeries, hormone therapy, PrEP and PEP, and much more. Learn more here.

Can you help me live undetectable?

We help our members living with HIV achieve and maintain viral suppression. People living with HIV who reach an undetectable viral load live longer, are healthier, and are unable to transmit HIV sexually to other people. Members who are undetectable for a period of time could/may be eligible to receive a financial incentive of up to $400 per calendar year. Learn more here.
