Free Community Wellness Event Promotes Nutrition and Healthy Living
New York, NY – On May 19, Amida Care, a not-for-profit New York community health plan, and BOOM!Health, a Bronx-based health services organization, hosted a healthy cooking workshop at the Grand Slam Banquet Hall in the Bronx. The free community event included an interactive cooking demonstration with Chef Timothy Fields, and participants received recipes and health resources. This event is part of Amida Care’s “Live Your Life” program, a program that keeps healthy living at the center of New Yorkers’ everyday lives. The event was made possible with support from Bronx New York City Council Member Ritchie Torres.
“We at Amida Care believe that health care needs to be approached holistically. Doctor’s visits and medication are important, but not enough. That’s why we offer our ‘Live Your Life’ events that cover all aspects of a person’s health, including healthy food, fitness and mental wellbeing. We’re grateful for the support of Council Member Torres, who puts an emphasis on health in the Bronx,” said Doug Wirth, President and CEO of Amida Care.
Amida Care holds monthly Live Your Life wellness events throughout the five boroughs of New York City, where members and their guests learn about ways to get and stay healthy. In addition to healthy cooking classes, the events cover topics such as art therapy, dance and fitness, meditation, aromatherapy, and more.
“Amida Care is not your average health plan: they have gone ‘above and beyond’ to ensure that New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds receive the best care possible. Amida Care’s ‘Live Your Life’ events show their commitment to our communities. Events like this cooking workshop give Bronx residents tools to make healthier choices year-round. I am excited and proud to work with such a great partner in galvanizing people throughout my district to ‘live your life’ the best way possible,” said Council Member Ritchie Torres.
“We are so excited to partner with Amida Care and Council Member Torres to engage the community in a fun, interactive event. Access to healthy food and nutrition services is a key foundational element to empower people to live their safest, healthiest lives. With limited resources and drastic health disparities in the Bronx, and the risk of cuts to crucial federal programs such as SNAP, it is now more important than ever to make sure the community knows where to access and how to prepare healthy foods that are affordable,” said Julia DeWalt, Director of Communications, Advocacy and Community Engagement at BOOM!Health.
