Amida Care Applauds Long-Awaited 30% Rent Cap for Low-Income New Yorkers Living with HIV/AIDS; Urges Launch of Taskforce to End AIDS in New York

February 14 2014

Amida Care commends the agreement announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio on February 13, 2014, to cap the rental contribution paid by individuals enrolled in the HIV/AIDS Services Administration rental assistance program at 30%.

By means of this action, more than 10,000 vulnerable New Yorker’s living with HIV/AIDS will gain access to affordable and stable housing. This will protect these individuals from becoming homeless, and at the same time, advance their health and wellbeing.

Providing this particular affordable housing safeguard is a tremendous step forward toward ending the AIDS epidemic in New York City and State. We therefore call upon the State to establish an End of AIDS Taskforce in this year’s Executive Budget, dedicating $10 million to create a strategic roadmap to end AIDS as an epidemic in New York State by 2020.
