Amida Care Hosts a Morning Fitness Session and Healthy Cooking Demo in Brooklyn

February 26 2020

Brooklyn, NY – On February 26, Amida Care, a not-for-profit New York community health plan, hosted a community health and wellness event at Van Dyke Community Center in Brooklyn. The event featured a free interactive fitness session led by Nakisha Smith of Alwayz Fit 4 Lyfe followed by a healthy cooking demonstration by Keri Watkins. Fresh produce and food pantry giveaways as well as face painting for kids was also included. This event is part of Amida Care’s “Live Your Life” program, a concerted effort to keep healthy and active lifestyles at the center of people’s everyday lives. The event is made possible thanks to support from New York City Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel. Other community partners include Medgar Evers College, BMS Health and Wellness Center, and Teens for Food Justice.

“At Amida Care, we take a holistic approach to health care. Our Live Your Life events show New Yorkers that a healthy lifestyle involves many things: from physical well-being and the right diet, to simply being able to de-stress in a fun-filled environment. We are grateful for the support of Council Member Ampry-Samuel, who makes health a priority in Brooklyn,” said Doug Wirth, President and CEO of Amida Care.

Amida Care holds monthly Live Your Life wellness events throughout the five boroughs of New York City, where members and their guests learn about ways to get and stay healthy. In addition to fun fitness classes and healthy cooking demonstrations, the events cover topics such as art therapy, dance, meditation, aromatherapy, and more.

“Amida Care has long proven itself to be a reliable health and supportive services resource to the people of New York City,” said New York City Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel (Brooklyn). “I am proud to partner with them as they take action in the neighborhoods of the 41 Council District to organize events like this one. We cannot emphasize enough the great importance of self-care and access to healthy food options. This interactive fitness session and cooking demonstration helps raise awareness about the many facets of a healthy lifestyle and promises to be both educational and fun.”
