Medicaid Must Make Critical Changes to Embrace the Potential of Groundbreaking Longer-Acting Medication for HIV Prevention and Treatment

Medicaid is the largest source of insurance coverage for people living with HIV and a major source of coverage for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a critical HIV-prevention tool. With the expansion of long-acting injectable products for HIV treatment and prevention on the horizon, the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University Law Center, in partnership with Amida Care and Cicatelli Associates (CAI) TAP-in project, released a policy brief calling on Medicaid officials at the federal and state levels to take crucial steps to harness the potential of breakthrough longer-acting products for HIV prevention and treatment.

The “Big Ideas” brief outlines concrete strategies for federal and state Medicaid leadership to capitalize on the game-changing promise of longer-acting products, with a focus on prioritizing access for those who are covered by Medicaid, representing populations most deeply impacted by HIV.

Advances in HIV clinical practices with the development of longer-acting products for HIV treatment and prevention could be transformative and could lead to more durable viral suppression, improved health outcomes, and fewer HIV cases. Unless Medicaid programs adapt and respond to these developments, however, the opportunity they provide will be missed.
