Celebrating & Participating in Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 through Sunday, October 15, a time to recognize and celebrate the history, culture, and influence of Latine people in the U.S. This year’s theme, Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America, highlights the immense artistic, social, and economic contributions of Hispanic Americans. Latines comprise the largest ethnic minority in the country, and Amida Care is proud that they also represent a large number of our staff and about a third of our members.

This month, let’s engage in activities that celebrate vibrant, diverse Hispanic communities. For some, it’s a celebration of their own culture; for others, it’s engagement that allows us to be cross-cultural allies.

Here are just a few events taking place in NYC during the next month:

  • Hispanic Heritage in the Heights: The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (4140 Broadway) is hosting an exhibition of contemporary artists from Washington Heights/Inwood and West Harlem. Opening and artist talk: Wednesday, September 27, 6-8pm; exhibit on view through January 9, 2024.
  • Arsenal Gallery: Mi Parque Mi Tierra: This NYC Parks exhibition in Central Park features nearly two dozen artworks that explore Latino culture and celebrate the environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits of green spaces in NYC and beyond. Through November 9, 2023.
  • As the nation’s largest Latine dance organization, Ballet Hispánico showcases Hispanic heritage through a lineup of performances and events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, culminating with community celebration Celebración Latina on Sunday, October 15 at different locations throughout NYC.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Industry City: A two-day celebration (September 23-24, 11 am to 6 pm) featuring local artists and crafters, music, sweets, and shopping at Industry City, Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the Clemente: Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture, traditions, and flavors of the Hispanic community and connect with others who share a love and appreciation for Hispanic culture. Live music performances, a Domino Tournament, and Puerto Rican cuisine from Que Chevere. Saturday, September 16 at 6 pm, 107 Suffolk Street, Manhattan.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, Queens Hall of Science: Join Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and many more for this celebration featuring DJ, performances, and food and drink, and performances. Wednesday, September 20, 6 to 8 pm. Location: 47-01 111th Street, Queens; free transportation from the 7 train.

We hope you enjoy exploring these Hispanic Heritage Month ideas!
