Transgender Awareness Week: Honoring Lorena Borjas

Transgender

As we observe and celebrate Transgender Awareness Week (November 13 – 19), we’re honoring those heroes who have led and shaped the TGNC experience in New York and the United States.

Lorena Borjas (1960 – 2020), Executive Director of Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo, was an incredible advocate known as the Mother of the Translatinx community in Queens. Lorena helped provide legal and financial assistance to transgender women, especially Latinx New Yorkers. For decades, she worked as an educator in HIV-testing, syringe exchange, and other programs with LGBTQ community organizations citywide. Last year, the New York State Assembly passed a bill enacting the Lorena Borjas transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) wellness and equity fund in her honor.

Here are the memories of some who knew her:

“I met Lorena Borjas in 1987 in Port Authority.  I was shy, nervous and scared. Lorena introduced herself in a gentle way and assured me that things were going to be well for all of us and that if I ever needed anything she would be there for me. Over the years, our friendship grew and both of us started to accomplish many things that we set ourselves to obtain.  I know that my story is similar to countless other Translatina immigrants in NYC.  She will always be remembered and honored for her contributions to our community.  May she rest in power!” – Cristina Herrera, CEO & Founder, Translatinx Network

“When asked about memories of Lorena, it is so hard to pick one. She was funny, caring and always moving. Among so many of her achievements, I have to highlight her ability to create community. She loved having people around her, and people gravitated towards her. A rare magic has left us. It will be difficult for us to fill that empty space, but because of what she created – community – we will always be together. That’s what she wanted, and that’s what we need!” – Cecilia Gentili, Principal, TransEquity Consulting

“Lorena Borjas was a tireless transgender activist who took advantage of her own experiences as a transgender woman, immigrant, and sex worker to help others. She had a great dream, to build a home where transgender women found refuge and support. Casa Trans Lorena Borjas was her life project. Unfortunately, she could not see her dream materialize. We will continue her legacy to make Casa Trans Lorena Borjas a reality and provide all the necessary support that the community needs.” – Liaam Winslet, Acting Executive Director, Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo
